Looking for smart ways to leverage Instagram sales? Online marketing powerhouse Amy Porterfield has the foolproof strategies you need.

Each of these effective Instagram strategies is powered by automation, using Manychat Instagram DM Marketing, so you can “set and forget” it – whether it’s a course, book reveal, or a launch offer.

Overview

Amy Porterfield is a New York Times bestselling author of Two Weeks Notice and host of the Online Marketing Made Easy podcast.

Amy’s journey from corporate “yes-girl” to an 8-figure business mogul is inspirational. She now has:

  • An 8-figure business
  • A community of over 50,000 eager students
  • A podcast with 49 million downloads, and
  • A 32-hour workweek

Amy, who has around 400,000 followers on Instagram, wanted to serve her audience on the platform without adding more to her – or her team’s – to-do lists, or sending her followers to endless “links in bio” for her separate courses and offers.

So, working with School of Bots, Amy was able to launch 19 chat funnels using Manychat in the past 10 months.

Let’s take a look at 3 ways Amy has leveraged Manychat Instagram DM Marketing – and how you can apply these exact strategies to boost your sales. 🤑

Use Case #1: Free webinar

Amy Porterfield has a free, evergreen masterclass, The Relaxed Business Owners Guide to Building a Profitable Email List,  that is related to her course, List Builders Society.

In order to promote her masterclass, Amy created a carousel post that detailed her experience of losing 5,000 Instagram subscribers because of a glitch. The post also encourages her followers to build a list that they own.

In the end card, she has a CTA for users to comment a keyword, so they can get instant access to her free masterclass.

Once they’ve commented on the post, they receive a message in their DMs. There, they are asked a few questions to register them for the free class – all on autopilot.

Swipe Amy’s strategy

  1. Create an engaging carousel post, offering in-depth information. For example, “3 easy ways to grow your email list.”
  2. When writing your post caption, include a CTA at the end that relates to the caption and the carousel post content. For example, “Comment CLASS to get instant access to my masterclass.”
  3. Connect your post to Manychat’s comment automation and create your flow in Manychat.
  4. Once a user comments, they receive the information on your offer. In this example, Amy sent information and registered people for her masterclass.

In the Instagram DMs, you can also ask for an email address. Once the user types it in, Manychat can automatically add it to your email automation software, so you can continue to nurture your audience on a list that you own.

Results

  • 3,243 Registrations Collected
  • 83% Webinar Registration Rate

Key Takeaway #1

Experiment with different content – such as posts, carousels, and Reels – and encourage your audience to engage by including a CTA.

Play the long game. Remember, offering value instead of pushing a hard sell is a potent way to encourage more sign-ups to your offer. You can also convert more subscribers into buyers by adding their email addresses to your list and nurturing them.

Use Case #2: Book purchases

Amy is the New York Times bestselling author of Two Weeks Notice. In order to promote her book and drive more sales, she posted a Reel of her book and offered a limited-time bonus with every purchase.

Users who commented on the Reel received a direct link to purchase the book and the free bonus – all in the Instagram DMs.

Amy was also able to collect valuable information on the person buying the book, including their name and email address, to add them to her own list.

Swipe Amy’s strategy

  1. Create an eye-grabbing Reel. Ensure it relates to your offer.
  2. Include a CTA in your caption and on your Reel. For example, “Comment BOOK to get access to the free bonus!”
  3. Connect your Reel to Manychat’s comment automation and create your flow in Manychat.
  4. Once a user comments, they receive the information on the book. Remember, you can also use this strategy for guides, webinars, cheatsheets, reports, and more.
  5. In the Instagram DMs, you can also ask for an email address. Once the user types it in, Manychat can automatically add it to your email automation software, so you can segment them out and reach out to them for reviews or feedback.

Results

  • 2,650 Emails Collected
  • 924 Confirmed Purchases
  • 35% Purchase Conversion Rate

Key Takeaway #2

Use this strategy to drive book sales and build excitement around your launch – you can use this exact tactic for preorders as well.

Sold out? You can also waitlist your audience and add them to your Instagram DM List to contact them when it’s back in stock.

Use Case #3: Instagram Live

Amy also used Instagram Live to drive more book purchases. She leveraged Manychat to help people get more information while she was live – and without taking them away from Instagram.

Swipe Amy’s strategy

  1. Set up Instagram DM Automation for Instagram Lives, and create your message flow within Manychat. School of Bots reports that about 85% of users will comment on the live, and give their email address in the DMs.
  2. Always pin a comment with the exact CTA. Even if somebody joins the Live for three seconds, they can still opt-in because they see the CTA there, and you’re able to collect leads.
  3. Label your Lives with the CTA. For example, “Comment BOOK to get on my preorder list.”

Key Takeaway #3

Use Manychat with your IG Lives to capture more leads.

Overall Results

In the past 10 months, Amy’s chat funnels have collected 18,634 new email addresses, and generated over $1.4 million in sales

The best part? 100% of these results are from her free, organic content.

In fact, using Manychat, creators have reported jumps from 50 comments to over 800 comments on a single post – that’s an increase of 1,500%.

Will you be our next success story?

If you’re looking for a cheat sheet for more organic sales, then digital entrepreneur Jenna Kutcher has the playbook you need.

Here are 3 powerful Instagram strategies to transform scrolls into sales and chats into cash flow without spending a cent on ads.

Overview

Jenna Kutcher is a digital marketing expert, New York Times bestselling author, podcaster, educator, and entrepreneur. She is known for her passion for helping others make a living doing what they love.

Jenna, who boasts 1 million followers on Instagram, was looking for a way to make the platform – one of her sources of business – convert more leads with conversations.

In the past 12 months, Jenna Kutcher has worked with the School of Bots to launch 40 chat funnels using Manychat.

During that time, Jenna has collected 38,490 new email addresses and generated $900,000 in sales. And she now has over 30,000 IG DM list subscribers.

The best part? 95% of these results are from free, organic content. 🤯

So, what is a chat funnel?

A chat funnel is a fully automated back-and-forth conversation between your business and an Instagram user, where you can do anything that would add value to your business.

You can almost think of this as a landing page and an email sequence process combined into an IG DM conversation.

With a chat funnel, you can:

  • Collect leads
  • Qualify leads
  • Recommend relevant products
  • Sell
  • Automate support

All in Instagram DMs.

Now let’s look into three use cases where Jenna Kutcher has leveraged Manychat to qualify leads, enroll more students in her courses, and sell more on Instagram, day and night.

And how you can swipe her easy evergreen strategies and use them to drive more traffic organically for your campaigns!

Use case #1:  Free Webinar

One of the revenue streams that Jenna has in her business is online courses.

Once a quarter, she has a new launch. During a launch for her program, The Pinterest Lab – which teaches people how to drive traffic using Jenna’s Pinterest strategy – Jenna leveraged Manychat Instagram DM Automation to invite people to her free webinar, which then upsells them to her Pinterest course.

In the past, Jenna would generate 12,000 registrations total for her entire launch, including sign-ups from paid ads, email strategy, Instagram – everything. This time, she was able to collect over 12,000 registrations  – organically – for her webinar using IG DM Automation! 👏

In fact, 55.6% of registrations came from the chat funnel, boasting an 85% registration rate. So in other words, 85% of people who commented on Jenna’s Instagram post registered for the webinar.

“If you think about your conversion rate of sending someone to a landing page and then having them opt-in, you would never see an 85% registration rate, and 13% of purchase conversions for our chat lead funnels,” says Jenna.

“So out of the 100% of people that opted in and signed up for the webinar, 13% of them ended up joining my program.”

Jenna and her team were able to drive nearly $500,000 in revenue through this funnel alone.

On top of this, Jenna also tested out different sign-up invitations when it comes to a launch.

What they found was when Jenna would talk about the benefits or the end result of how the course would impact somebody’s life, and she was promoting it through more of a lifestyle way, those posts converted better than “hard sell” marketing strategies.

For example, her Pinterest program promotes a strategy that takes just one hour a week. So Jenna’s content would focus on her audience’s ability to expand their return on investment with the investment being an hour per week of their time.

Jenna would activate all the different angles that would advertise the main point, which was to drive traffic using Pinterest.

Results

  • 12,489 webinar registrations
  • 55.6% of registrations from the chat funnel alone
  • 85% registration rate (in other words, 85% of people who commented on an Instagram post ended up registering for the webinar)
  • 13% purchase conversion rate for chat funnel leads
  • $491,659 revenue made

Key Takeaway #1

When you start to think about Manychat automation and calls to action, you don’t have to have hard sell content. Think about covert ways that you can communicate the end result or the benefits of what you’re selling.

This will likely resonate with your audience and be content that people will watch and enjoy – and connect with it, even if they don’t know that they need the thing that you’re talking about.

Use Case #2: Free Quiz

Jenna’s free quiz, called Level Up Quiz, was one of the first automation that she set up for her business using Manychat. This quiz was intentional and was built to do two things.

First, it is aimed at serving their audience with the best place that Jenna can start helping them based on their responses.

As Jenna has been an entrepreneur for more than a decade, she has many free resources and online courses. The quiz works as a “qualifier” to help her audience navigate through the resources and courses and find the right one for them.

The second thing that this quiz gives Jenna and her team insight into what their audience is working on and needs more of.

“This is basically like a direct line of saying, ‘Tell me what you need and let me help you in the best way possible’,” Jenna explains.

“This is our main opt-in that we have up on my Instagram as a call to action when we’re not in a promotional campaign. So it is a very great entry point to our brand, our education, how we can help serve people and really get them into our ecosystem.”

The quiz includes a series of simple questions and it allows the audience to be in the driver’s seat of their outcome, almost like a “Choose Your Own Adventure” novel.

And then at the end, based on the responses to those questions, they connect them to Jenna’s best resources.

Since its launch, the quiz has collected nearly 6,000 emails and has an 85% completion rate, and it keeps her audience on the one platform to complete it – Instagram.

“One thing that I absolutely love about this automation is that a lot of people have incredible quizzes, but they’re sending people off Instagram onto a different platform,” adds Jenna.

“What’s incredible about how we were able to set this one up is that people can literally take the quiz in their DMs by answering super simple questions and then getting the correct result delivered again in their DMs, never inviting them off the app, never asking them to stop scrolling their newsfeed. They’re already there and they’re getting served.”

Using Manychat also means Jenna can automatically follow up with her quiz-takers to ensure that the resource they delivered was the right one and to see if they’re interested in the next steps.

Results

  • 5,836 Emails Collected
  • 85% Quiz Completion Rate

Key Takeaway #2

If you have a quiz anywhere else or you’ve never considered creating a quiz, using Manychat is an easy way to build one to connect your audience to something that they need that you already have.

It also means you gain valuable insights to see where your audience is at in their journey and what they are requesting.

Use Case #3: Book Purchases

Jenna is a New York Times bestselling author of a book called “How Are You Really?”. She wanted to build out a chat funnel because the book is a main content pillar in her business.

“It’s something that I’m very proud of and something that I want to get into more people’s hands. So we created a very simple chat funnel so that whenever I talk about a content theme that has some inclusion to my book, I can drive a result,” Jenna explains.

Using Manychat, someone can comment the word BOOK or BOOK CLUB, and then they will get sent a DM saying, “You want to hear about my book? When you buy my book, you will also get $997 value for free with this special thank you gift.”

Since they’ve been running that chat funnel, they’ve collected over 3000 emails. They’ve had over 1000 confirmed purchases, and a 37% conversion rate for somebody who comments, does the funnel, collects the freebie, and orders the book.

“If you are sending people to platforms that you don’t own and can’t control, say Amazon, you are not able to gather their customer information, but with Manychat you can,” adds Jenna.

One of the biggest challenges with Jenna’s book is that she was selling copies, but she couldn’t actually reach out to her customers for feedback or a review directly.

When Jenna started doing the feedback process using Manychat, it meant she could collect info on people who are not only interested in getting the book, but the people who purchased the book and claimed the freebie.

“And the best part is that people can claim that freebie right in their DMs. They don’t even have to leave the platform. So this is one thing that I wish I would’ve had when I launched my book over a year ago, but it is better late than never,” Jenna adds.

Results

  • 3,187 Emails Collected
  • 1,164 Confirmed Purchases
  • 37% Conversion Rate

Key Takeaway #3

If you’re selling a product on a different platform and you can’t track your customer information, setting up a chat funnel using Manychat can be an amazing way to do that.

That way, you can get back in touch with those people, to check in with them post-purchase, and to follow up with them if you have additional offers that they might be interested in.

Jenna’s 3 Hot Tips to Drive More Sales on Instagram… Organically  🔥

1. Focus on your content creation strategy

Start approaching Instagram in an entirely new way. Think about what your brand pillars are. What do people think about when they think of you, and how do I make somebody care about this content that I’m sharing?

What story can I tell that makes it more compelling? We want to think about the content creation strategy from a place of not just checking off our to-do list, but how can I make this exciting to engage with so that people get in the practice of engaging with what you’re sharing?

2. Create your first Manychat automation

Make it simple, but an effective funnel so that you can start to see real results. Identify the goal of the funnel, set it up, and then try different strategies to invite people to engage with it.

Remember, sometimes the more covert methods work better than being super overt about what it is talking about.

So think of the different angles. Think of the things that people might be interested in that are parallel or adjacent to what it is that you’re sharing.

3. Try different calls to action (CTAs)

In the actual post itself or in the caption copy, give your audience a reason to test it out. You will not get results, and you will not get insights if you’re not trying different things.

Don’t be afraid to experiment, but create that first automation and then consistently share it over and over and over again to figure out what works best for you and your audience.

Broadcasting for Instagram has finally landed! 🥳

Until now, businesses were restricted to Meta’s 24-hour rule, which meant they could not re-engage customers using Instagram DM Automation tools after the initial 24 hours had passed.

Now, Instagram DM Lists are the official way you obtain your subscribers’ permission to broadcast to them on a daily basis – directly in their DMs.

What is broadcasting for Instagram?

Formerly called Recurring Notifications, and previously only available on Messenger, Instagram DM Lists are a smart and cost-effective way to stay in touch with your subscribers on Manychat.

Let’s explore how to set up Instagram DM Lists and their use cases.

The top use cases for Instagram DM Lists

Let’s take a look at how our Agency Partners and Educators implement Instagram DM Lists for a range of use cases.

They use them for:

  • Giveaways, like “12 days of” seasonal giveaways
  • In-person and virtual event registrations
  • Free newsletters detailing upcoming events and competitions
  • Announcements to your paid membership community
  • Upcoming sales, promotions or secret gifts
  • Evergreen campaigns, like challenges and webinars

There are also multiple ways to encourage subscribers to opt-in using:

  • Instagram keywords
  • Instagram comments
  • Instagram Story reply
  • Instagram Live comments
  • Ads that Click to Instagram Direct
  • DM link (For example: ig.me/m/your_username)

Best of all, these tools are available within Manychat.

Next, you’ll learn how to set up your first Instagram DM List and send it as a broadcast.

How to create your Instagram DM List within Manychat

⚠ Before you get started: Instagram DM Lists are only visible to Manychat Account Owners and Admins.

In order to broadcast to your Instagram DM list, you must first have your subscribers opt into your list.

To do this, you will need to create your Instagram DM List and give it a topic.

In order to broadcast to your Instagram DM list, you must first have your subscribers opt into your list.

  1. Choose any automation with a ”Messenger list” feature (we recommend adding a default one to the Welcome Message) To do this, you will need to create your Instagram DM List and give it a topic (the default one we suggest is called ‘’Promo and Updates’’.

  2. Well done! You’ve created your first Instagram DM List! 🥳 Your Instagram DM List is now ready to use. Note that you’ll use this message flow to encourage subscribers to opt into your Instagram DM List so you can broadcast to them regularly.
  3. Now, let people opt-in to your Promo & Updates [default] list to confirm their subscription status. Use CGT (comment growth tool) or any other Manychat feature to boost your DM list flow.

⚠ Remember: You can create multiple Instagram DM Lists for your subscribers, but you must have them opt-in to each list in order to send them that broadcast.

Step 2: How to broadcast to your Instagram DM List 🚀

After subscribers have opted into your Instagram DM List, you can use the Broadcast tool within Manychat to send out a broadcast to these subscribers.

Head over to “Broadcasts” section on the left-hand side of your Manychat dashboard.

Hit “New broadcast”.

Select broadcast with Instagram, and then type the message that you want to send to your Instagram DM List.

This message should be related to the topic of your Instagram DM List you created in Step 1: Creating your Instagram DM List Topic.

You can include a button, image, or gallery of images if you wish. For Instagram DM Lists, you are limited to three content blocks.

For example, you can send two messages and one image, or two images and one message in a single broadcast.

When you’re ready to send your broadcast, hit the “Target Audience” button in the bottom left-hand side of your dashboard.

From the drop-down menu, select the Instagram DM List you created in Step 1: Creating your Instagram DM List Topic.

Hit “Send now” to send your broadcast immediately.

Remember to follow this process for each Instagram DM List you create.

Is your Instagram inbox exploding with 1,000 messages asking the exact same question every day?

Are you struggling to reply to every comment, story mention and reaction, so your engagement rate is sinking each time you post?

Are you thinking of hiring a personal assistant to answer your messages, but you’re afraid they just won’t sound like you, and then you factor in their hourly rate…?

Then Instagram DM Automation is one low-cost tool you can use to help automate your FAQs, generate and qualify leads, and ignite your engagement.

Instagram DM Automation can be used every time you use Instagram, and works with every platform feature, including:

  • Story replies, reactions, and mentions
  • Feed posts
  • Reels
  • Instagram Live
  • Instagram Direct Ads
  • Instagram DM List (coming soon – currently in beta!)

Creators report that Manychat IG DM Automation drives up to 60% of Instagram sales. 🤑

So let’s take a look at what IG DM Automation really is, and how to set it up with your Instagram account.

What is Manychat DM Automation?

Manychat is a leading Meta-approved platform that can build an entire sales funnel on Instagram, so you can generate sales, attract leads, and increase conversions, while automatically replying to every story, comment, and DM in a way that still sounds like you.

Why use Instagram DM Automation?

IG DM Automation is one option you can test out that will help you save time and answer your followers on time, every time.

You can use it to:

  • Answer your FAQs, even while you sleep: You don’t need to manually respond to 1,000 of the same messages in your Instagram inbox. IG DM Automation responds for you, 24/7, and it costs less than a virtual assistant and never forgets to respond. Best of all, it can scale with you as your brand grows.
  • Build a contact list of qualified leads: You can build a contact list, generate and collect leads, and re-engage with prospects. Plus, you can also qualify leads in your DMs, segment them, and only speak with those who are actually interested in what you’re selling.**
  • Automate your Instagram sales funnel: Shave down the time it takes to get a prospect on a consult or sales call, launch new collections, gather reviews, and add links to your online store.
  • Have more conversations that lead to sales: Launch special offers, and run giveaways, challenges and quizzes to increase revenue – all while you’re asleep.
  • Build brand awareness: Cultivate your community, and add a personal touch to increase engagement, and drive higher conversions. Personalization is key here. IG Automation allows you to personalize every response so it really sounds like you.
  • Attract and convert more leads: If you’re running ads, or even if you’re sharing content organically, IG Automation can help you generate and qualify leads.

Content creator Kahlea Wade uses IG DM Automation to grow her email list:

”I created keywords to use as CTAs for my social content that promoted free resources and events I’ve recently hosted. By implementing those keywords in Manychat, I was about to grow my email list by over 2,500 subscribers in just a few weeks. I saw a massive increase in conversions and engagement within just a week of using the platform.”

How to automate your Instagram account using Manychat

Manychat Instagram DM Automation gives you the tools to set up automated messages for your followers. Each time a follower comments on your post, Manychat delivers a personalized comment reply and DM to each follower on your behalf.

Building your first automation is easy and fun using our intuitive and visual Flow Builder. Plus, you can customize your messages so it matches your tone of voice.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to automating your Instagram account with Manychat:

Create a Manychat account and connect it to your Instagram account. We have a video tutorial you can follow here.

Next, create communication flows for your Instagram account by choosing one of our automation Flow Builders: visual or basic builders.

⚠ In Manychat, messages in your automation are called “flows”. We’ll refer to them as flows for the remainder of this article.

◼ Use Keywords

To trigger your flow, you’ll set a keyword. When someone types this keyword in your DMs, they’ll be sent your automatic reply.

For example, say you’re offering a free download. You could tell your followers to DM you the word “freebie” to receive the PDF. When your follower sends you the keyword in your DMs, your automation sends them a message with the PDF link.

For advanced flows, you can use specific conditions to qualify the keyword trigger.

◼ Set up your Story mention reply

Now, let’s set up a Story mention reply. This will send each time someone mentions your Instagram account in their story.

For example, if someone mentions your @ username, like @Manychat.

⚠ A Story mention reply can trigger a new flow, which you’ll create, or you can select an existing flow in your Manychat account.

In this flow, you’ll ask each follower’s information, such as their name and email address. Manychat will store this information so you create a robust database.

◼ Re-engage your audience using Instagram DM Lists (BETA)

Broadcast with your Instagram account using Instagram DM Lists (currently in beta).

Instagram DM Lists are like email blasts for your Instagram inbox.

With your follower’s permission, you can send newsletters, daily challenges, last-minute offers and more – it’s so easy to schedule and send.

◼ Turn your comments into conversions!

Manychat Instagram DM Automation allows you to automate responses to comments on posts and Reels.

Each follower gets a personalized, automated response in their DMs each time they comment on your post or Reel, so you build trust and create a bond with your community.

Final thoughts

So, you can see the untapped potential of your Instagram and how you can leverage Manychat Instagram DM Automation to drive more sales, qualify leads, and spark engagement. It’s no secret that growing a business on Instagram has its pitfalls (and its perks).

But there is a lot of confusing and conflicting information out there about using the platform to help bolster sales.

Post every day!

Use five hashtags!

Use influencers!

Do more Reels!

No, post more photos instead!

The list goes on and on.

And it can be exhausting! 😮‍💨

But it doesn’t have to be.

Rather than resisting the urge to throw your computer (or phone) out the window each time someone casually mentions, “Why don’t you use Instagram to grow your business?” – like you hadn’t thought of it before! – there are ways to turn low-ROI posts into money-making machines. 🤑

The secret?

Instagram DM Automation by Manychat.

Firstly, why use Instagram?

Let’s start with the facts.

In case you’re feeling jaded about Instagram, it’s still an important channel for business.

Instagram has more than 2 billion monthly active users with Meta referring to the platform as “the favorite destination for users to connect with brands”.

And it’s easy to see why…

According to Instagram’s own data, 90% of people follow at least one business on the platform, and 70% of shoppers look to Instagram for their next purchase.

And despite TikTok appealing to Gen Z, Instagram is still a winner for 18-to-34-year-olds, who make up 60% of the platform’s user base.

Now we have the stats, let’s look at how Instagram DM Automation can elevate your existing marketing efforts.

The top use cases for using Instagram

Our Agency Partners and Educators use Instagram DM Automation in a variety of clever ways, including:

  • Giveaways and competitions
  • In-person and virtual event registrations
  • 5-day challenges
  • Coupon codes or discounts
  • Lead magnet or templates
  • Mystery gifts
  • Influencer marketing
  • FAQs
  • Product galleries
  • Lead generation and qualification
  • Plus many more!

There are also multiple ways to grow your subscribers using Manychat, including tools like:

  • Instagram keywords
  • Instagram comments
  • Instagram Story mention reply
  • Instagram Live comments
  • Ads that Click to Instagram Direct

DM link (For example: ig.me/m/your_username)

So, no matter if you’re a newly minted startup, or a down-in-the-trenches business veteran,  here are four ways you can leverage Instagram DM Automation to grow your business.

1. Start small – leverage engagement

Regardless of your follower count, the easiest way to start is by leveraging audience engagement, like comments, Story replies and DMs, using Instagram DM Automation to answer FAQs and deliver a discount code to interested leads to help you hit those sales targets. 🎯

🚀 Your goal:

Answer FAQs, and deliver product galleries, coupon codes, or digital freebies in the DMs, to help drive more sales.

🚀 Your strategy:

For this, you can utilize Manychat tools, including Instagram keywords, Instagram comments, Instagram Story reply, and Instagram Live comments.

Set up your Instagram comments, Story reply, and keywords to trigger when your audience types a certain word.

You can start with a question in your Story.

For example, if you run a clothing store, you can ask, “Do you find it difficult to find sweaters that keep you warm in the snow?” Then share some images or a video of your sweaters, along with some text that summarizes their benefits.

Add a single call-to-action at the end, such as, “Reply with the word SWEATER for 10% off your first purchase.”

When prospects reply with SWEATER, your automation delivers the discount code instantly.

Plus, if you’re already chatting in the DMs, it’s easier for potential customers to raise a question or objection about your product. You’re far more likely to make a sale when you answer customer inquiries directly.

(You can also automate your FAQs, so customers instantly receive a response. This stops them from checking out your competitors while they wait for a manual response.)

For your feed posts, you can make your CTA the same, and use Instagram comments to deliver the coupon code in the DMs.

2. Got some momentum? Run ads that click to Instagram

According to Instagram data, 50% of users become more interested in a brand after they see an ad for it on Instagram.

So, let’s attract more of your target audience. One of the best ways to do this is by running ads that click to Instagram.

These look the same as a regular newsfeed or Story ad, but instead of clicking through to a landing page, it’ll send a message directly to your lead’s DMs.

By creating a personalized Instagram DM experience, you can boost sales with potentially lower ad costs compared to other channels.

⚠ Remember: your ad should have a Story-size and feed-size graphic.

🚀 Your goal:

Use ads that click to Instagram to reach more potential customers by offering your audience something they can’t live without.

This could be a free five-day challenge, a lead magnet, a discount code, a mystery gift, a free-plus-shipping offer, or webinar registration.

🚀 Your strategy:

Choose what your freebie will be, and set up your flows within Manychat.

Next, head over to your Facebook Business account to start setting up your ads.

⚠ For step-by-step instructions on how to set up your ads, check out our in-depth Instagram ads video tutorial here.

3. Buddy your automation up with influencers

According to a survey by Influencer Marketing Hub, the influencer marketing industry is set to grow to approximately $21.1 billion in 2023.

In fact, more than 83% of survey respondents still believe influencer marketing to be an effective form of marketing.

🚀 Your goal:

Partner with an influencer that reaches your target audience.

For example, if you’re a pet-food brand, look for doggy influencers.

Try working with nano- and micro-influencers (accounts with 1,000 to 10,000 followers, and 10,000 to 100,000 followers, respectively), to keep costs low.

🚀 Your strategy:

For this strategy, you’ll need to configure your story mention reply, and keyword trigger.

To drive traffic to your brand’s Instagram DMs, the influencer will create a video or post about your product, with an offer like a discount code, mystery gift, or free sample.

The influencer shares the content on their newsfeed and story, and tells their followers to share the content, and mention your brand username (e.g. @superdogtreats).

The influencer will also tell their followers about a secret keyword you’ve created just for them, so they can get the special offer (e.g. treats1).

When the influencer’s followers share the content mentioning your brand username, they automatically receive a DM from your Instagram account.

In the flow, you’ll also ask for the secret keyword, and once the lead gives the keyword, you automation reveals the details of your offer.

⚠ Pro tip: Make sure the influencer agrees for you to use their content for your brand ads!

4. Go viral! Run a giveaway – but ditch the “like, comment, share” prompt 🔥

Hosting an Instagram giveaway is a smart way to generate targeted leads, gain new followers, and create positive sentiment for your brand.

After all, who doesn’t love a freebie?

🚀 Your goal:

Build a customer profile collecting first-party data, boost sales, and leverage existing audience engagement.

🚀 Your strategy:

Take a leaf out of Four Reasons’ playbook for a viral Instagram giveaway strategy leveraging Instagram DM Automation by Manychat.

Shying away from the drab “like, comment, tag” Instagram giveaways, Four Reasons ran a product bundle giveaway to their existing audience and used Instagram ads to reach more ideal buyers.

Their Manychat flows collected customer information, including email addresses and phone numbers, and incentivized sharing for more chances to win.

To do this, Four Reasons tapped into gamification.

They assigned each entrant a unique referral ID and provided access to a leaderboard to track their progress. Hello gamification! 👋

To improve participants’ chances of winning, they were asked to perform the following actions:

  • Reacting to a particular post
  • Following the brand on Instagram
  • Tagging three friends
  • Completing this sentence in the comments: “My favorite scent of a shampoo is : _”
  • Mentioning the brand in their Instagram Story
  • Sharing the contest giveaway post with their friends, using their unique Referral ID

Following the giveaway entry, participants would receive the Four Reasons Amazon promotion message to boost sales of their new product line.

⚠ Don’t forget: Play by the rules! Check out Instagram’s Promotion Guidelines for hosting a giveaway. For further details, we’ve broken down the rules in this article here.

Implementing any one of these four strategies on Instagram, and pairing them with the power of Instagram Automation, can help your Instagram DMs run on autopilot, and generate more revenue.

Right now on Instagram, you’re competing for your customer’s attention.

And losing. 😨

Sales are flatlining.

Engagement is low.

You are at the mercy of the algorithm.

But there is a silver lining to help you drive more leads and sales, recover abandoned carts, and answer FAQs on autopilot you probably haven’t thought about…

Instagram chatbots.

Let’s explore how you can leverage Instagram for eCommerce and pair your existing efforts with Manychat’s Instagram Automation to build your first sales funnel.

Why use Instagram for eCommerce? 🛍

With more than 2 billion monthly active users, Instagram is marketed as the destination where people connect with friends, brands, and things they love.

In fact, 90% of people follow at least one business on the platform, and 70% of shoppers look to Instagram for their next purchase.

It’s no secret that messages, like Instagram DMs, drive more people from discovery to purchase.

According to a Facebook-commissioned online study, two-thirds of consumers who use messaging apps to interact with a business have contacted them while in the process of shopping. In a 2020 Facebook Messaging Research study, 68% of international adults surveyed said: “I am more likely to do business with/purchase from a company that I can contact via messaging (e.g. via chat app, text) than one that I cannot.”

The top ways eCommerce businesses leverage Instagram DM Automation 💬

Our Agency Partners and Educators (as well as a variety of top brands, like Nike and Four Reasons) use Instagram DM Automation, or Instagram chatbots, in a variety of clever ways, including:

  • Offer ways to seamlessly purchase in the DMs (including using product galleries)
  • Giveaways for lead generation and list-building
  • Recover abandoned cards
  • Drive sales with personalized chat experiences
  • Answer FAQs 24/7 without lifting a finger
  • Provide buttons to purchase triggered by keywords
  • Offer coupon codes
  • And many more!

There are also multiple ways to grow your contact list using Manychat, including native tools like:

  • Instagram keywords
  • Instagram comments
  • Instagram Story mention reply
  • Instagram Live comments
  • Ads that Click to Instagram Direct
  • DM link (For example: ig.me/m/your_username)

So, whether you’re a new venture hoping to squeeze more revenue from Instagram or an established eCommerce juggernaut ready to smash those sales targets, this is one of the first funnels to build. 🤖

Let’s guide your customers through the path to purchase, step-by-step.

1. Ditch the manual effort in replying to FAQs day and night

👀 Customer “path to purchase” stage: Awareness stage

Let’s start with the basics…

Are you tired of answering hundreds of DMs manually?

Before your lead goes to a competitor, your Instagram chatbot can answer the most common questions instantly.

There’s no need for a human to step in, dramatically reducing your customer service costs.

But if your customer requests a human, you can jump into live chat or Instagram DMs to answer them.

The most common way to set up your FAQs is using a keyword trigger, which fires off when your customer types in a keyword.

For example, let’s say a customer likes a blue sweater you’re selling but they want to find out what sizes are available.

They may send a message like “What size does this come in?”

And you can automate a response with a link to your sizing chart – all within the DMs.

2. Grow your database – and build a list that you own

👀 Customer “path to purchase” stage: Awareness and consideration stages

If you’re looking for a surefire way to turn randoms into raving fans, the best way to do that is through nurturing.

But first, you have to capture their details at the entry point.

With Instagram chatbots, you’re able to create a chat experience that records your leads’ details so you can market to them later.

By collecting first-party data, like phone numbers and email addresses of your leads, you’re able to retarget your audience, recover abandoned carts, and grow a database that you own – regardless of any platform changes, like iOS14.

In fact, one of our agency partners was able to grow their client’s database from zero to about 1,000 contacts from just 10 Facebook posts connected to Manychat’s Comment Automation tool.

3. Generate more leads using ads that click to Instagram Direct for a personalized shopping experience

👀 Customer “path to purchase” stage: Awareness, consideration and purchase stages

Next, consider running ads that click to Instagram.

You can reach more ideal buyers, and on the flip side, you can retarget those who viewed your products but didn’t buy.

Best of all, you can start conversations with your potential customers at the click of a button.

Here’s how it works.

Once your prospect clicks on the ad, automated questions guide them to your most relevant products – all sent through Instagram DMs.

Plus, you can even ask your leads questions and record the answers to build a robust customer profile.

Once the customer clicks on their desired product, they’re taken to your website to complete their order – all without leaving the Instagram app!

Using ads that click to Instagram Direct, you can boost sales with potentially lower ad costs compared to other channels.

4. Host a giveaway that ignites engagement… and ROI

👀 Customer “path to purchase” stage: Awareness and consideration stages

A giveaway is a smart way to leverage engagement to attract new and existing customers.

Best of all, with Instagram chatbots, you can bypass the dull “comment, like, share” prompt of regular Instagram giveaways.

Using Manychat, you can capture the leads commenting on your giveaway post – and send them directly to your DMs to register their entry.

Try a mystery gift promotion, “12 days of” giveaway, or viral gamification giveaway.

At the end of your giveaway messages, you can send an upsell with a special offer just for participants to drive more sales.

In fact, Four Reasons haircare used an IG gamification giveaway with an upsell that resulted in 227.59% ROI and $19,000 in sales.

6ft6 Wine used a 12-day giveaway strategy to generate 1,295 leads in 12 days with zero ad spend.

In a similar fashion, GeForce Now powered by Pentanet also implemented a 12-day Instagram giveaway strategy, generating 491.88% ROI for the brand.

And don’t forget the biggest sales event of the year: Black Friday and Cyber Monday!

Orca Marketology founder, Mackensie Liberman, developed a mystery gift framework using Manychat that helped her client pocket an extra $29,271.89 in revenue in just 7 days for their BFCM campaign. 🎁

5. Recover more abandoned carts

👀 Customer “path to purchase” stage: Purchase stage

Now your customers have added an item to their cart but haven’t pulled the trigger…

Or your customer would like a product that’s currently on waitlist or back order.

Your Instagram chatbot can send them a discount code to ensure they proceed to the checkout.

You can even include an expiry and send a reminder before the time is up (within the first 24 hours).

In fact, Manychat delivers a 58% lift in recovering abandoned carts vs. industry average. Plus, Manychat recovers an average of $154 per cart. 🛒

Final thoughts

Implementing this eCommerce strategy with the power of Instagram Automation can reduce your customer service time and costs, generate more revenue, and reach more customers.

📣 Meet the latest power couple: Ads that Click to Subscribe and Messenger Lists in Manychat.

What are Ads that Click to Subscribe?

Ads that Click to Subscribe are shown in the Facebook and Instagram feeds and are the easiest way for your audience to subscribe to your Messenger Lists.

Ads that Click to Subscribe pair with your Messenger List on Manychat, so you can instantly obtain consent to re-engage every single subscriber who opts in.

Currently, Ads that Click to Subscribe are shown in Messenger and Instagram Feeds and are in an open Beta.

Take a look:

Unlike Ads that Click to Message, Ads that Click to Subscribe show the Messenger List opt-in invitation immediately after your audience clicks on the ad, streamlining the user journey and emphasizing the opt-in invitation.

So the ad, opt-in message, and opt-in confirmation are shown within the Facebook and Instagram apps. These messages will be shown in Messenger.

What is a Messenger List?

Formerly called Recurring Notifications, Messenger Lists are a smart and cost-effective way to communicate with your subscribers in Manychat after the initial 24 hours have passed.

Ads that Click to Subscribe are paired with Manychat Messenger Lists, which are the official way you obtain your subscribers’ permission to broadcast to them on a daily basis – directly in Messenger.

Step 1: Create a Messenger List topic and opt-in invitation message in Manychat

🔥 For a detailed guide on how to create Messenger List topics in Manychat, go to this article.

Before you start creating your Ads that Click to Subscribe in Ads Manager, it’s important to create your Messenger List topic and opt-in invitation message in Manychat.

Don’t skip this step! This topic and opt-in invitation flow will be connected to your Ads that Click to Subscribe in Ads Manager in the next step.

⚠ You must create the Messenger List topic and opt-in invitation in Manychat before you go into Ads Manager to create your ad. If you create the ad first, you will need to discard the draft and start the ad creation process again.

Step 2: Start creating your ad in Ads Manager

Once you have created your Messenger List topic opt-in invitation in Manychat, you can start the ad creation process in Ads Manager.

Ads that Click to Subscribe are only available under the Engagement objective, so select this objective at the ad set level.

Next, ensure that “Messenger” is selected as the messaging app at the ad set level, as Ads that Click to Subscribe are optimized for delivery through Messenger.

You can choose the call to action (CTA) at the ad level.

Meta recommends using “Get updates” or “Get promotions” as the CTA, although these options may be subject to change.

Step 3: Select the Messenger List opt-in

In the Message template at the ad level, make sure to select “Send marketing messages” as the option.

Ads that Click to Subscribe are delivery-optimized for opt-ins, so a pop-up will appear. Hit “Continue”.

Hit “Edit” to open the message template.

Here, you can also add an additional welcome message to the opt-in invitation to make it more engaging for your audience.

In the dropdown “Topic” list, you will see the Messenger List topic that you created in Manychat.

Select this option to connect your ad with the Messenger List opt-in invitation.

Hit “Save and finish”.

Step 4: Review and publish your ad

Double-check all the settings and options in your ad, including the opt-in invitation, CTA, and message template. Once you are satisfied with your ad, click on the “Publish” button to make it live.

And that’s it! 🙌

Your Ads that Click to Subscribe are now set up and ready to help you build a database for marketing purposes, send marketing messages to your target audience, and re-engage your customers to generate more sales. 🤑

Final thoughts

Ads that Click to Subscribe are a powerful tool for building a loyal audience, capturing leads, and driving sales.

By following these simple steps, you can create effective and engaging ads that will help you hit those sales targets, grow your list, or support your marketing efforts.

Four Reasons had a hairy problem.

The haircare brand was launching a new product range and wanted to ensure strong sales.

They had a loyal fanbase on Instagram but didn’t know how to leverage it…

Until they discovered Digital Marketing Bot’s viral Instagram competition method using Manychat.

Overview

Founded 20 years ago in Finland, international hair care eCommerce brand Four Reasons USA has since expanded worldwide with its range of vegan, sustainable haircare products, from everyday staples like shampoos and conditioners to texture-specific styling products and treatments.

The company’s vision is simple: “to inspire and empower people with sustainable products, the best service, and a worldwide beauty community.”

So to launch its new range, Four Reasons The Original, Four Reasons joined forces with Manychat Agency Partner, Digital Bot Marketing, led by founder and CEO, Claudia Whetstone.

Claudia’s agency specializes in customer acquisition, engagement, conversions, and post-purchase support using omnichannel chat marketing funnels.

  • 227.59% ROI
  • 346% sales conversion increase from Instagram
  • $19,000 in sales attributed to Manychat

The challenge

Four Reasons wanted to implement a viral giveaway contest strategy to attract followers, promote The Original product line on Amazon Marketplace, and increase engagement on Instagram.

Shying away from the drab “like, comment, tag” Instagram giveaways, Four Reasons wanted a fresh way to reach a new audience, convert their existing followers, and build a database of high-quality leads.

They had tried paid ads and Amazon Sponsored ads previously, but the Pay Per Click (PPC) was expensive and the brand was not able to generate its own customer list.

When Claudia approached them, they were excited to learn more about Manychat and the benefits it offers.

“Four Reasons were excited to use this Chat Marketing strategy to generate their own customer list, and increase their paid and organic post engagement, which reflected in lowering their PPC than any other paid objective they had tried in the past,” explains Claudia.

“It was obvious that Manychat would be the best choice for this marketing campaign since it provides instant and engaging communication with customers.”

The goal

With the goal to attract more ideal buyers using Instagram ads and leverage their existing engaged Instagram audience, Four Reasons agreed that a viral giveaway campaign, where participants could win mix-and-match haircare bundles, would be the best way to test out Instagram DM Automation by Manychat.

“So, with that in mind, we designed our flows to collect first-party data and provide their customers with their products through an omnichannel marketing funnel,” explains Claudia.

The strategy

Digital Bot Marketing created a lead generation funnel based on viral engagement and sharing. Its main purpose was to build the brand’s Instagram leads list of email addresses and phone numbers.

In order to fuel existing entrants’ desire to gain more entries, Digital Bot Marketing tapped into gamification. The agency leveraged a powerful human psychology concept – loss aversion theory.

The loss aversion theory states that individuals would rather avoid losses than acquire equivalent gains.

This theory plays an important role in gamification as users who earn or receive awards as a result of gamification don’t want to lose them.

So, they will continue playing in order to retain them.

With this in mind, the Manychat flow would collect the entrant’s details and generate a unique ID that they could use to track their progress on the leaderboard.

In addition, participants also had access to the leaderboard in Google Sheets, where they could track their points. The points were automatically awarded after each action they took.
Hello gamification! 👋

Daily, contestants were informed about their position on the leaderboard via SMS and email notifications.

All participants received a second ID, a unique referral ID, which they were instructed to share with their friends.

This referral ID allowed their friends to enter the giveaway contest, and the original participant would gain extra points.

Points could also be earned by performing the following actions to improve participants’ chances of winning:

  • Reacting to a particular post
  • Following the brand on Instagram
  • Tagging three friends
  • Completing this sentence in the comments: “My favorite scent of a shampoo is : _”
  • Mentioning the brand in their Instagram Story
  • Sharing the contest giveaway post with their friends, using their unique Referral ID

Following the giveaway entry, participants would receive the Four Reasons Amazon promotion message.

All entrants received this offer to pick one of five products sold on Amazon.

“This helped with sales velocity on Amazon, improved ranking and review generation,” explains Claudia.

“Using promotional and educational content, Four Reasons was also able to increase sales from Instagram by remarketing to existing and new followers,” Claudia adds.

The results

A proven success, Four Reasons’ viral Instagram giveaway strategy generated engagement rates 40% higher than any other organic content Four Reasons had posted in the past three years.

In a matter of weeks, not only did the brand generate more leads, but they also reduced the cost of those leads, down from $17 per lead (landing page conversion) to a tiny 65 cents per lead using Manychat.

In addition, from an ad spend budget of $2,300, the campaign generated 3,539 new Manychat subscribers, 389 sales, and a 346% sales conversion increase from Instagram.

In total, this Manychat strategy accounted for $19,000 in sales, and 227.59% ROI.

Key takeaways

If you’re looking for game-changing ways to boost your Instagram giveaway, then take note of these three important factors:

  • Design an omnichannel giveaway. Collecting email addresses and phone numbers not only allows you to build a healthy database of quality leads, which you can remarket to in the future, but this also means you can reach your customers on multiple touchpoints. You can remind them to perform actions for extra entries, and entice them to make a purchase.

Leverage the viral power of engagement and shares. Create a giveaway that appeals to your target audience, and encourages actions like sharing, commenting, and following the brand, which helps increase your chances of going viral.

Utilize gamification. Don’t forget to tap into human psychology! Gamify your giveaways using tactics like leaderboards or scoreboards, badges, points, countdowns, and progress bars.

Claudia has a final word of advice for first-timers looking to leverage Manychat:

“For businesses new to using Manychat, start with Instagram as it tends to be the most effective and efficient platform for achieving results,” she says.

“Many of our clients have experienced significant revenue growth, sometimes as much as 100-800%, just by using organic content on this channel.”

Organic reach and engagement on Facebook is dead… ⚰
Or so they say.
Floreat Forum found a way to leverage comments and spark engagement among their community of loyal shoppers without a large ad spend.
It also produced the highest on-page engagement in the entire history of its Facebook page.
And all it took was one Manychat feature, and a proven strategy executed by Perth marketing agency, AdSocial.

Overview

Floreat Forum – a shopping mall located in Floreat, just outside Perth, Western Australia – has more than 90 specialty stores anchored by grocery chains Woolworths and Coles.
Opened in September 1965, Floreat Forum was touted as Perth’s first American-style shopping mall, offering residents the variety and convenience of city shopping in one suburban location.
Fast forward to the present day, Floreat Forum was looking to engage with its local community to showcase retailers within the mall and encourage more footfall to the property.
Floreat Forum’s team attended a Chat Marketing presentation by Amberlea Henriques, founder of AdSocial, a Manychat Agency Partner.
They were impressed by Manychat’s Comment Growth Tool, and how it could provide strategic value to the content they were sharing on their Facebook page.

So, Floreat Forum teamed up with AdSocial to explore the possibilities of seasonal campaigns, closing with a prompt to subscribe to monthly Recurring Notifications (now known as Messenger List within Manychat).
This meant Floreat Forum could broadcast to its audience in a direct and personalized way outside of the 24-hour window.

  • 3800% increase in new messaging conversations
  • 300% uptick in engagement on posts
  • 26.9% increase in reach

The challenge

The number one challenge AdSocial faced was finding a way to organically capture the attention of Floreat Forum’s audience on Facebook.

Their solution?

Create value-driven campaigns to entice particular audience segments to engage with their content. 🎯

Using powerful calls to action, such as “comment to receive recipe tips or gift suggestions” or “comment to win vouchers from a retailer”, Floreat Forum grew its direct marketing list from zero to about 1,000 contacts from just 10 Facebook posts connected to Manychat’s Comment Growth Tool.

The goal

Floreat Forum wanted to take its content beyond just vanity metrics and receive strategic value –  including creating brand awareness and boosting engagement – from the posts they were sharing across both Facebook and Instagram.

With this in mind, Adsocial’s goal for Floreat Forum was twofold:

  1. Leverage Messenger List (Recurring Notifications) opt-ins to increase read rates by offering a unique way of receiving news and announcements.
  2. Showcase retailers in interactive ways, through competitions, value-based content, tips, recommendations and shopping guides.

In addition to this, being able to identify key target audience groups and tagging conversations in Manychat is a great way to understand the mall’s consumer demographics, and market to them appropriately.

“Manychat provides the opportunity for more granular insights versus the basic insights, like age and gender, available in Meta’s Insights,” adds Amberlea.

The strategy

AdSocial leveraged Manychat’s Comments Growth Tool as a persistent feature in each of Floreat Forum’s campaigns, closing off with a prompt to opt into Messenger List.

The Comment Growth Tool was attached to key posts to grow their marketing database, build consumer profiles for future marketing campaigns, and leverage free remarketing with high read and open rates using Manychat’s broadcasting tool and Messenger List.

The value-driven content targeting the audience and tying in with the mall’s retailers is where Amberlea saw the biggest spike in click-throughs to Messenger.

Encouraging the audience to comment to receive recipes, cleaning tips or gift suggestions had a click-through rate of 85.7%.

The click-through rate to win vouchers for restaurants or clothing stores was 93%, and the event guides’ CTR was 91.7%. 😮

Each conversation ended with a prompt to opt into the monthly digital newsletter, adding the subscriber to Floreat Forum’s Messenger List. They could then broadcast their update once per month.

“The Halloween event guide performed the best,” says Amberlea. “We asked if people wanted a reminder before the event, with 75% opting in.”

This also gave Floreat Forum the opportunity to see if anyone was no longer able to attend so that those on the waitlist could be offered tickets.

They would also ask for the subscriber’s email address, which would be added to Floreat Forum’s email database. Since this strategy has been in place, the email open and click-through rates have also increased.

The results

Using the Comment Growth Tool attached to key Facebook posts and Messenger List opt-ins, Floreat Forum saw an increase of 3800% in new messaging conversations and a 300% uptick in post engagement.

On top of this, there was a 26.9% increase in reach.

Plus, six of the top 10 posts that generated the highest on-page engagement in the entire history of Floreat’s account were connected to the Comment Growth Tool. 🤯

Key takeaways

In order to get the most out of the Comments Growth Tool to grow an engaged database, steal a page from the AdSocial and Floreat Forum playbook:

⚡ Leverage the  Comment Growth Tool:  Identify your key Facebook posts, include a powerful call to action, and offer an incentive for your audience to comment. This growth tool puts your comment responses and Messenger conversations on autopilot – and boosts engagement.

👥 Create a granular profile of your audience: Using Manychat’s tagging capabilities, you can create an in-depth profile of your audience members, so you can create targeted campaigns they’ll love – and bump up your ROI.

📣 Don’t forget broadcasting! Using Manychat’s Messenger List feature, once you obtain permission from your subscribers, you can communicate with them in Messenger outside of the initial 24 hours. A monthly digital newsletter is a great low-investment entry point to start communicating with subscribers.

For the future, AdSocial’s goals include growing Floreat’s monthly digital newsletter opt-ins and sending targeted email blasts to communicate with shoppers regularly and improve long-term engagement.

“With many preferring to stay connected via their work email addresses, we are confident that this will be a more engaging audience in time, too,” adds Amberlea.
