Facebook Messenger now offers this feature for free, Instagram is in open beta, and WhatsApp operates on a pay-to-play model.

Deleting Contacts: Keeping Your List Valuable

Maintaining a clean and effective Contact list is crucial. We recommend removing Contacts who haven’t opted into any retargeting options after a certain period, a good rule of thumb is 3 months. Instagram DM Automation launch

 

Super Bowl Instagram Automation

Right around our 5th birthday, we launched Instagram DM Automation; all of us at ManyChat were (and still are) incredibly excited to add this critical channel to the Chat Marketing revolution!

Some of IG Automation’s critical features include:

  • Flow Builder: Customize text, media, and destination URLs (such as a website) and instantly launch chat experiences, all without writing any code.
  • Keywords: Trigger messages, entire conversations, and business automations if an Instagram (IG) user messages you with a specific, pre-determined keyword or phrase.
  • Comments Automation: Also known as Comments Growth Tool (CGT), this feature can trigger three distinct automations at once: 1) reply to a user’s Instagram Post Comment with a comment, 2) like or “heart” a user’s comment, and 3) send the user who commented a message.
  • Story Mentions Trigger: Instantly reply to everyone who mentions your brand’s handle/account name in a Story.

We’re excited to announce that DM automation for Instagram Live Comments is now available at ManyChat.

There’s been a big shift with brands on Instagram to use Lives because it allows the human behind the brand to connect with their audience on a personal, unfiltered level and is a powerful way to grow on Instagram.

One of the biggest issues many brands faced with Lives was tracking and managing comments from a live stream in an effective, scalable way.

The introduction of the Instagram Live Comments trigger will allow brands to send an automated DM reply when viewers comment during an Instagram Live. This is huge.

You can now easily start a DM conversation with viewers actively engaging during your Live in real-time and at scale, nurturing your audience via automated DM funnels to convert them into customers.

Let’s take a look at this powerful new trigger and how to boost your Instagram Live strategy to new heights.

From Instagram Live to your DMs


There are several reasons why you’ll want to incorporate Instagram Lives into your business strategy, but this main reason should make it a no-brainer:

All users that have the app open will get a notification that you are Live and your icon is bumped to prime position over IG Stories.

Once your Live has started, getting viewers from your Live into your DMs is a powerful way to shift from a 1-to-many level of engagement to a 1-on-1, personalized conversation that they initiate.

Using this trigger, anyone who comments during your Live will instantly get a DM reply from you. You can set up custom Keywords to trigger the automation, letting you deliver a clear call-to-action (CTA) during your Live, and your DM automation takes care of the rest.

This is what the experience can look like for an IG Live with DM Automation:

It’s already natural for users to comment during a Live and having a clear CTA that’s powered by automation will allow you to create personalized DM conversations that move them down your funnels.

To grow brand awareness, invite a fellow co-host to your Live with a compatible following and get in front of a new audience. With DM Automation, you can now funnel these new prospects into your own DMs and engage them 1-on-1, at scale. 

Here are some other ways to do use DM Automation for Lives:

  • Get registrations for an event, webinar, training, etc.
  • Grow email/phone lists in exchange for a free guide, newsletter, etc.
  • Book appointments by redirecting them to your website 
  • Send a coupon code and link them to your store to purchase


…and much more.

Now let’s take a look at how to build DM automation for Instagram Lives.

How to build DM Automation for Instagram Lives

The Instagram Live Comments trigger will only fire your DM automation once for every first comment from viewers. This means you have one shot during every IG Live to get viewers from your Live into your DMs and move them further down your funnel to convert.

You’ll find this new trigger when you click ‘Add Trigger’ from your Starting Step and you can customize your Keywords once you add the trigger:

One thing to note is that the first message sent back via DMs after the comment can only include a Text block with a Button or a Quick Reply for the next step. 

Your contact will need to interact with the Button or Quick Reply (opt-in) in order for the 24-hour window to open and the rest of your automation to fire, so make that first message enticing enough to get them to move forward:

It’s also good to think about the timing of your call-to-action for comments. The first message will be sent via DMs upon comment, so the pop-up notification could take viewers away from your Live prematurely if they tap the notification and go into DMs. 

One way to manage this is to include a Smart Delay so that the rest of your automation fires after your Live is over:

As long as that first DM reply is sent during the Live, you can ask viewers to rejoin your Live and the rest of your automation will fire once the delay has expired.

For more advanced automation using this trigger, you can include other steps such as a Condition, Action, or Randomizer step before the first message. 

We add an Action step before the first message in this example to Tag users that initiated this discount/early bird flow:

Now you can send Instagram followers to your Instagram Flow once they interact with your Story with Story Reply trigger.

And, no more redoing Flows from one channel to another. We’ve heard your feedback and we are excited to announce that Convert Channels—which assists in cross-channel marketing saving you time and effort—is finally here! And, it’s available to all ManyChat accounts. Here’s how to use Story Reply trigger and Convert Channels. 

Instagram Story Reply trigger

New to Instagram Automation, the Story Reply trigger makes it simple and efficient to create automated replies to be sent to your followers when they reply or react to one or all of your stories. This trigger can be found either in your Flow Builder as a trigger in a Starting Step or in the Growth Tools section of your ManyChat account.

This feature allows you to:

  1. Send a unique message when your followers “react” to your Stories (e.g. 🔥😍👏)
  2. Set a message to send after a follower replies to your Story with either a specific Keyword or to trigger for all replies

Some ways you can use this feature:

  1. Use this tool in your campaigns: Prompt users to send you a DM directly from one of your stories with a certain Keyword to receive more information or with an offer/coupon
  2. Keep track of your loyal fans: When someone “reacts” to one of your stories, send them a message with a offer or simply thank them for interacting with your page and keep track of how many times they interacted with your stories
  3. Organize and save time: Save you and your team time manually answering Story replies by creating automation funneling people to correct information and also organizing all these messages in one place
  4. Build community and increase engagement: Garner a sense of community by automatically sending a message to each Story reply

How to use the Instagram Story Reply trigger:

  1. Go to Flows and create a new flow
  2. Once in a Flow, click on Starting Step and select +Add Trigger

  1. In the pop-up, select Instagram and Instagram Story Reply as the trigger

4. After selecting the Instagram Story Reply trigger, you will be taken back to your Flow where the trigger was implemented

5. On this step, you can select for the Instagram Story Reply trigger to work with all your Instagram Stories or a specific Story

6. For selecting a Specific Story, you will need to grant extra permissions when initially setting up the trigger

7. After granting these permissions, you can select the Stories you would like to use for this tool

8. Triggering Based on a Keyword: You can set up the tool to only trigger based on if a user messages you a specific Keyword or phrase or reacts to your Story. With Keywords, you can have it trigger for a message with only a specific Keyword, if a message contains a Keyword, or begins with a Keyword. Note: Keywords that are set up here override Keywords set up in other parts of your bot.

9. Press Save before continuing

10. Build out your flow and publish it once finished. After publishing, activate the trigger on the bottom left hand side 

Convert Channels

Convert Channels is the newest tool available to all ManyChat accounts. This tool allows you to convert a flow built for one channel and convert it to another channel. For example, you have a flow built for Messenger, now with a few clicks, you can copy and convert that flow into an Instagram one in no time. Some more examples include Instagram-to-Messenger, Messenger-to-Instagram, Messenger-to-SMS and you can convert multi-channel flows also.

This tool will save you the time and effort that it might take to copy and paste flows to new message blocks over and over again and give you more time in implementing and optimizing new channels!

To use this tool:

  1. Go to Flows and select the Flow that you would like to convert (this flow must be published)
  2. Select the button with three dots next to the Publish button

3. Once the dropdown menu appears, select the Convert channels option

4. After selecting this option, a pop-up will appear where you can select which channels to convert your flow from and to with the Select Channel option. If you have multiple channels in one flow, you will see multiple choices you can make here (only channels within ManyChat will appear in this dropdown)

5. After selecting a channel as the target, click Duplicate and convert to start converting the flow

6. Your existing flow has now been duplicated as a new flow in your target channel

Please note: If you try to convert a part of the flow that isn’t supported in another channel, that part of the flow will not convert. For example, if you have the Buy Button in your Messenger flow and convert the whole flow to Instagram, the Buy Button will not transfer over as it is not supported in Instagram.

If you have been resistant in moving your automation over to a new channel, like Instagram, due to time constraints and work duplication, with Convert Channels now is the time to get building!

Creating and using Keywords within ManyChat has gotten a new look and feel. With the most recent update, you can now create new variations/options of a Keyword by easily pressing “Enter” on your keyboard or selecting “+ Keyword” after each one.

The new Keywords update also supports keywords and phrases that include commas in them. 

Some examples of how this can improve your automation include: 

  • If you want to include a frequently asked question such as “Hey, what are your business hours?”  
  • Setting up an auto response to collecting a monetary amount like ”$1,000” or “€1,00”. This is useful if you are qualifying leads or trying to respond to a customer pricing discrepancy.

Keywords work for Messenger, Instagram, SMS, and Email and can easily be located on the left-hand bar menu after selecting “Automation” or within Flow Builder as a trigger as a starting step.

Date/Time Picker for Instagram Automation

The Date/Time Picker is now available for Instagram Automation. This means, like with Messenger, when utilizing the User Input function, you can now have your contacts select the date and time directly within the conversation. 

Some ways you can utilize the Date/Time Picker include:

  • Booking appointments or calls directly within Instagram DM. With the new Date/Time picker, you can have the option open up immediately within Instagram DM and can save the contact’s selection directly to ManyChat.
  • Collecting birthdays and other important dates from your contact. If you want to send a contact a special offer, via Email or SMS on their birthday, you can collect that information directly within ManyChat and send them a coupon or discount on their special day.

To start using the Date/Time Picker, go to Flow Builder, edit a message block, add a User Input, and under “Reply Type” choose “Date or Date and time”

What’s changing on the Free plan?

Effective September 1, 2021, all ManyChat Free accounts will have a limit of (3) custom Keywords and (1) Team Member per account.

If you are an official ManyChat Agency Partner, agency-managed accounts will have a limit of (2) Team Members per Free account, to allow for client onboarding to the account.

Free accounts will still be able to enjoy all existing Free plan features, but once the account reaches these new limits, you’ll need to upgrade it to a Pro plan to continue sending messages to contacts.

System default Keywords such as START/STOP and SUBSCRIBE/UNSUBSCRIBE are not included in this limit and are applied only to custom created Keywords. 

Keywords or Team Members may be removed from the account to stay within the limits of the updated Free plan.

What’s changing on the Pro plan?

Effective September 1, 2021, new ManyChat Pro accounts will be subject to new Pro pricing, starting at $15/month for up to 500 contacts.

Contacts may still be deleted or unsubscribed from your Pro account and will not be counted towards your maximum contact limit per pricing tier.
